It’s the Final Countdown…

This is it Australia. Tomorrow night, the wait will be over, and our future will finally be revealed. For me, this future either involve enthusiastically anticipating a brighter, fairer Australia where relations with the U.S. are not considered more important than our education and health, or migrating to New Zealand. Then again, New Zealand also has a G.S.T. and a Work Choices-type system…but at least Little Johnny won’t be there. Unless of course he decides migrating to New Zealand is a much more attractive option than living under a Rudd government. In which case, I won’t be there, because I’ll still be here, enthusiastically anticipating a brighter, fairer Australia, where… now I’m just repeating myself. Which seems to be what this entire campaigning period has been based upon: mind-numbingly aggravating repetition of ideals and policies, and circular arguments which always involve slagging off the opposition. Yawn. Like a horribly long car trip where the scenery appears the same from one hour to the next, all that is left to be asked is “Are we there yet?”

That’s not to say there haven’t been at least a couple of interesting changes in scenery as the Election ‘07 journey has progressed. It has been somewhat amusing that the Libs just can’t seem to get a break, what with brilliantly timed interest-rate rises, equally as brilliantly timed explicit language from Tony Abbott, a damaging report on where they’ve been allocating their funds (wow, WHAT a surprise that the Libs would favour, would you believe, Lib and National seats! Bet no one has EVER done that before. But still. Bwah ha ha ha!) and their most recent gaff involving trying to win votes with not so underhanded racism. Labor has had its fair share of misfortune as well, but I suppose you could argue that due to the ‘me too’ style The Rudd has adopted, all of Labor’s gaffs are actually John Howard’s fault, too. Twisted logic I know…but it works for me!

To continue with my roadtrip analogy, the journey is fast approaching its end, and in a few short hours (actually, long, gruelling hours if you have to hand out how-to-votes like I do), we will reach our destination. Australia, is really is up to us now… will we choose to continue dancing with the devil, or, erm, with someone who seems to be slightly less evil yet kind of the same? Soon we will know…
