The War on Democracy, or, America is Awful

Ok I admit it, I am completely partial to consuming a bit of propaganda, especially when it is presented to me in a highly entertaining disguise, particularly film or literature. This enjoyment escalates even further when said propaganda supports my value system, and allows me to maintain and often build upon any stereotypes or conceptions I have firmly cemented into my brain, irrespective of their accuracy. Ahhh….

Anyway, being cheap flick day at the Dendy yesterday, I took myself off to see the latest offering from the fabulous journo, author and doco-dude John Pilger, a documentary titled The War on Democracy. To summarise, it’s about what an EVIL bunch of people run the US, and what an EVIL bunch of people have been running the US since the beginning of time, and how these EVIL people will stop at nothing to ensure that their interests are firmly protected. So yes, it is an entirely bias propaganda piece. But seriously, pushing that aside, I truly believe now more than ever that the United States is controlled by an awful, awful bunch of people, and that this bunch of awful, awful people really are out to ruin the entire world. I can practically hear you reading this and thinking “Well, yeah, that’s what the doco makers want you to think!” But seriously. Go and see this movie, you’ll see that the so-called ‘Land of the Free’ should more appropriately be known as the ‘Land of the Free- for a Select Group of Old, Rich White Men who are Racist, Cold-Blooded Murderers’.

I have to admit, when it comes to the wheelings and dealings of the US, I am fairly ignorant. While I have always been unimpressed by her style of cultural imperialism, I really had no idea how far her leaders would go to ensure their country remained secure, and to apparently protect the Western ideals of ‘democracy’. Nations have been ruined and left to squander in poverty in order to ensure the US remained secure, innocent people who have risen up against this injustice have been tortured and killed in US-supported regimes that have been orchestrated to ensure the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It’s disgusting, and has happened in so many countries. Iran, Iraq, Chile, Guatemala, Venezuela, Bolivia, all these places have felt the wrath of the United States, a country that is meant to support freedom and democracy. What a joke. And to think our current leader is practically at the beck and call of a government that so actively and frequently denies the rights it claims to so whole-heartedly defend of so many innocent people across the world.

Argh I’m so angry! Go and see The War on Democracy, it’s shocking and will make you mad, too.
